The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has officially published the Encrypted Media Extensions (EME) specification as a Recommendation. That decision makes EME an official Web standard.
The vote in this situation was unusually close. The final tally showed 58.4 percent of W3C members approving the specification, 30.8 percent opposing and 10.8 percent abstaining.
EME provides an interface for digital rights management (DRM). Some influential groups, most notably the Free Software Foundation, oppose all DRM. Streaming media companies, on the other hand, generally favor it. That disagreement made the publication of the EME standard unusually controversial.
