Basic telephony will soon be coming to HTML5 via Mozilla’s WebAPI (application programmable interface). WebAPI is said to be Mozilla’s attempt to make the line between open web standards and native APIs even thinner, and should work in all browsers, not just those that Mozilla creates.
One of Mozilla’s technical evangelists, Robert Nyman, discussed the proposed functions of the WebAPI, which include an address book, dialer, SMS, camera, games, maps and a gallery. Nyman stated that “Security is a very important factor here, and it will be a mix of existing security measurements (e.g. asking the user for permission, like Geolocation) or coming up with new alternatives to ensure this.”
Mozilla isn’t going it alone–once they’re done with design and implementation, they will be submitting the WebAPI to the W3C for standardization, something that other telephony providers have avoided thus far.
